Abstract

1363070 Rear-view mirrors JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 3 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 60178/70 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A vehicle rear-view mirror comprises a wedge shaped reflective element 12 having surfaces 13 and 14 of different reflective properties and supported by a dished housing 11, and a separate overcentre mechanism 18 pivotally mounted on a lug 16 and fingers 17 of a pivot piece 15 secured to the housing the mechanism 18 being formed of resilient plastics with two integral portions 19 and 21 joined by a hinge 22 the portion 21 being shaped with two mutually inclined and tapering parts to form a spring which urges the hinge 22 to either of two positions on both sides of a plane passing through the pivotal axes of the mechanism 18. The surface 14 may be aluminized to have higher reflective power than the surface 13 and the appropriate surface may be rotated to the viewing position by operating an extension 25 of the mechanism 18. A spigot 26 attached to the portion 19 is formed internally with a spherical recess and externally with screw threading and is longitudinally slit to define a ball-and-socket joint with an end of a mounting bracket 28, the joint being tightened by a nut 27. In an alternative embodiment the housing 11 is omitted and the element 12 is supported directly by the pivot piece 15 to which it is adhered.
