Abstract

1359073 Automatic electric control of machining ROHR INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Aug 1972 37899/72 Heading G3N A numerically controlled machine tool is responsive to a programme bearing sequential segments representative of operations to be performed related to selectable full and undersize cutters. As shown, Fig. 4, a programme for a numerically-controlled machine tool is prepared in dependence on a family of cutter sizes ranging from T-O1 standard size to T-O5 which is 40 thousandth of an inch undersize due to successive re-grinding. The programme is prepared in segments, 34, 33 each of which represents a machining operation for which a tool has to be selected, and comprises separate machining instructions for an operation for each cutter of a family. A machine tool, not shown, is actuated by signals from a control 21, Fig. 5, responsive to a tape reader 24 which is stepped by signals from a control 75. The selection of a cutter size for an operation is made by an operator actuating a switch bank 30 which sets a store 45, having indicator lights 29s, and a register 55. The contents of store 45 are compared in a device 65 with the contents of a store 85, having indicator lights 29p, which is responsive to signals from the controller 21 as the control 75 stops the tape in the reader 24. The reader control 75 is stopped when coincidence is established. The controller 21 carries out the machining operation at the completion of which the selected tool store is cleared and the start of a subsequent operation inhibited until a new tool selection is made. The register 55 clamps reader control 75 until a tool selection has been made to prevent synchronous operation of the reader, a switch 31 is closed to by-pass the register when using an uncoded tape. The movement of the tape is initiated by actuating a scan-switch 32 after the selection of a toolcode on switch-bank 30. The circuit is arranged to ignore codes in a completed operation by recognition of the T-01 code of the new operation.
