Abstract

1357754 Machine readable cards PITNEYBOWES Inc 30 July 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 36039/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B6] A machine readable card is made by applying a suspension of a magnetic pigment in a resin binder as a strip 20 on a plastics film 14, passing the coated strip through a magnetic field to properly orient the grain for optimum signal-tonoise ratio on read out, drying the coating and laminating the film 14 to a base 12 under heat and pressure so that the resin of the dried magnetic strip 20 is blended with the resin of the plastics film 14 whereby the magnetic strip 20 is permanently adhered to the card and is substantially flush with the card surface. A second plastics film 16 may be concurrently laminated to the bottom surface of the base 12 to protect any printed matter thereon. The plastics films 14 and 16 are preferably transparent and may be made of polyvinyl chloride. The magnetic pigment preferably has a high coercivity to prevent accidental erasure, e.g. cubic cobalt modified Fe 2 O 3 . The base is preferably opaque and may have printed matter on one or both sides and may also be formed of polyvinyl chloride. In a mass production technique a plurality of parallel spaced strips of the magnetically encodable material are applied to one surface of a plastics film which is then laminated to a base and the laminated film and base are then cut into a plurality of cards each bearing a segment of said strips.
