Abstract

1354357 Silanes hydrolysed on to or with an inorganic substrate E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16698/71 Heading C3T [Also in Division B1] A chromatographic packing comprises an organosilicon polymeric (or mixtures thereof to vary the degree of cross-linking) stationary phase chemically bonded to a polyvalent metal or metalloid containing substrate. The polymer has repeating units of the formula where A is -O-, hydroxy, or, as R may be as well, a monovalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group or substituted derivative thereof and is chemically bonded to the substrate by an linkage where M is the polyvalent metal or metalloid and is part of one of the repeating units. The stationary phase has an average thickness of from 30-10,000Š and the polymer comprises 5 to 80 per cent of the volume of the stationary phase. The packing is made by contacting the substrate with a solution in an organic solvent, of (i) the monomer where R 3 is OH or R, or (ii) the hydrolysable compound where R 1 and R 2 are alkoxy and R<SP>1</SP> 3 is alkoxy or R 3 other than hydroxy. The solution is heated to cause polymerization and chemical bonding. The heating is carried out in the presence of less water than 100 times the equivalent of the monomer when the solution contains -the hydrolysable compound in order to form the monomer. The substrate may be silica gel, a glass, sand, a diatomaceous earth, quartz, an aluminosilicate, porous silica beads, a clay, a non-alkaline metal oxide or metal having an oxide skin, alumina, thoria, titania, zircona, or the column wall itself. It may be in the form of rings, polyhedra, spheres, saddles, platelets, fibres, hollow tubes, rods or cylinders. The packing may be used in gas, liquid partition or ion-exchange chromatography.
