Abstract

1352962 Corrosion-resistant coated structures BAYERISCHE MOTORENWERKE AG 21 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13184/72 Heading B3A A method of forming a partially or completely closed sheet metal structure having a corrosionresistant coating on the internal surface thereof comprises forming parts 2, 3 from unshaped sheet metal stock having on at least one side thereof a coating 6 of a material having a high content of one or more metals and/or graphite, and welding together the sheet metal parts to form the structure, the coating material being resistant to deep-drawing, electrically conductive, and suitable for welding. The coating material, containing at least 50% by weight of metal and/or graphite, may be sprayed, rolled, or poured on to the sheet stock, the stock may be dipped, or subjected to electrophoresis following suitable pretreatment, e.g. phosphatizing, to improve stability of the corrosion-resistant layer. The coatings are based on varnishes and synthetic resinous paints with a metal powder content, e.g. zinc or aluminium powder, and/or graphite powder. The coatings must be able to remain crack-free during forming operations. The coated metal sheet parts are deep-drawn and in a particular embodiment, i.e. a hollow frame 1 for a vehicle floor, joined along flanges 4 by spot-welding at areas 5, although rollerwelding can be used. The coating 6 can be provided with an additional coating by electrophoresis to improve the corrosion protection.
