1348154 Ultrasonic inspection devices NA. TIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Nov 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 40642/71 Headings H4D and H4J [Also in Divisions A5 and G1] An instrument for measuring intra-uterine pressure and foetal heart rate comprises a pressure-sensitive element 7 surrounded by a rigid guard ring 6 on which is mounted an ultrasonic Doppler effect apparatus arranged to transmit an ultrasonic signal through the element 7 and receive the reflected signal resultant from movement of the foetal heart. The element 7 comprises a diaphragm formed integrally with the guard ring from a metal. A cover 8 incorporating a part-cylindrical lens 9 is bolted to the ring and a heart beat detector unit 21 rests on lens 9. A chamber 14 defined between diaphragm 7 and lens 9 contains an electrically insulating mineral oil. The bottom face of unit 21 operates half as a transmitter and half as a receiver, the unit producing a pencil beam signal which is modified by lens 9 and transmitted through chamber 14 and diaphragm 7 to the foetus. The reflected signal is fed through an amplifier with automatic gain control for smoothing variations due to foetal movement, a band pass amplifier, a detector with a dead. time generator which inactivates the detector for a period following a heart beart, and a rate meter for producing an output signal representing the heart beat rate. A reading may be given on a visual or chart recorder.
