Abstract

1348102 Luminescent materials and uses thereof KEWANEE OIL CO 28 April 1972 [30 April 1971 13 Sept 1971] 19928/72 Heading C4S A polycrystalline scintillator of doped alkali alkaline earth metal halide or thallous chloride is formed by extruding under pressure a macrocrystal at a temperature lower than the melting point but greater than either 200‹ C. or half the melting point temperature. The temperature is preferably 100‹ C. below the m.p.: extrusion at lower temperatures results in inferior scintillators. Materials include NaI : Tl, CsI : Tl or Na, KI : Tl, LiC : Eu, CaF 2 : Eu and TlCl 2 (Iodides). Melt grown multiple crystal ingots or monocrystals are extruded; pressure being applied by a plunger, orifice or a screw feed. Pressures are 800-4000 psi for alkali metal halides and 13-45,000 psi for CaF 2 . The extrusion cross-section is cylindrical, rectangular, triangular, semicircular or annular. The extrusion is cut and polished or pressed at elevated temperature to form camera plates, windows, domes and lenses for use in geophysical surveys, clinical measurements, radiation monitoring and spacecraft.
