Abstract
1348086 Acoustic testing COMMISSARIAT A LENERGIE ATOMIQUE 9 Oct 1972 [8 Oct 1971] 46423/72 Heading H4D A method of testing a material comprises applying stress to the material and simultaneously recording on a single device the magnitude of the applied stress and the acoustic emission generated thereby and time. Gauge 75 measures the mechanical stress (thermal or bending) applied to a test material and supplies an analogue signal to converter 76. Acoustic emission from the test material, e.g. due to cracking or plastic deformation is sensed by a detector and signals are passed to threshold 38 which supplies an integrator 44. Clock 70 periodically opens gates 68, 78 which feeds the stress amplitude to recorder 72 and the emission amplitude to store 66 and thence to recorder 72. Timing signals are also recorded. Displays 80, 82, 74 may also be provided for the recorded signals. Recorder 72 may be a printer, tape punch, magnetic tape or computer store. Further embodiments are described in which the outputs from several acoustic detectors are summed before recording and in which more than one form of stress is applied and recorded.
