Abstract
1345764 Dispensing liquids by gaseous pressure UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA REGENTS OF 10 May 1971 [18 May 1970] 14046/71 Heading F1R [Also in Division A5] An infusion pump suitable for implantation in the body of a living animal comprises a housing 10, a first chamber 24 within the housing for containing infusate and having an inlet 36 and an outlet, a self-sealing member 38 in the inlet, and a fluid-tight pressure-communicating partition 18 separating the first chamber from a second chamber 23 containing means to move the partition to reduce the volume of the first chamber 24 so that infusate therein is forced out through the outlet. The pump is implanted with the self-sealing member 38 just under the skin of the body, whereby the first chamber 24 can be periodically refilled with infusate through the member 38 by injection through the skin. The chamber 23 contains a volatile fluid which exerts a pressure on the partition, which is preferably in the form of a bellows 18, at physiological temperatures. The outlet of the chamber 24 is provided with a flow-regulating device in the form of a capillary tube 40, the tube also serving to transmit the infusate to a site of infusion. Alternatively, the flow-regulating device may take the form of a porous plug (not shown). The self-sealing member 38 comprises an elastic plug, but may alternatively comprise a ball valve (not shown). The chambers 23, 24 may alternatively be separated by a resilient diaphragm, or the chamber 24 may be formed from a flexible bladder (not shown).
