Abstract

1344667 Making hollow-ware; jointing SNAM PROGETTI SpA 29 Nov 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 55397/71 Headings B3A B3Q and B3V A lining is expanded against the wall of a hollow vessel by fluid pressure to reduce the clearance therebetween, the lining and wall being heated prior to or contemporaneously with the introduction of the inflating fluid. Linings of titanium, zirconium or stainlesssteel may be expanded by an O group gas, e.g. argon, or steam against a carbon steel wall. Expansion may be effected at temperatures up to 500‹ C. Cooling may occur before pressure decrease. As shown, the lining 2 may include axial and circumferential butt welds 3, one end of the lining being welded to a ring 7, and the wall 1 may include vent holes 14 some of which are threaded to receive gauges for sensing the expansion operation. The vessel is sealed by end plates 9 before expansion by steam at 530‹ C., the outside of the casing being heated inductively and the assembly reaching a mean temperature of 300‹ C. Butt straps 11, 12 may be used along the welds and argon supply holes open into grooves 10 formed in the wall beneath the straps 11, 12 for the supply of argon during welding of the straps.
