Abstract

1336093 Catheter assemblies C R BARD INC 19 May 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 23747/72 Heading A5R A catheter assembly comprises a plastics catheter 10 connected at its proximal end to the distal end of a flexible tubular member 12 of self-sealing material which is initially bent as in Figure 1, a needle 22 initially passing through the wall of member 12 into the bore of catheter 10, the proximal end of member 12 carrying an infusion hub or being such that a second catheter 31 projects into member 12, whereby, after introduction of catheter 10 into the patient, needle 22 can be withdrawn to allow member 12 to straighten and to enable the catheter 31 or the infusion hub to be used in co-operation with catheter 10. In use, needle 22 is projected through catheter 10 until a needle hub 25, 28 is adjacent to a hub 11 on catheter 11, whereupon a guard member 42 is removed and needle 22 and catheter 10 are inserted into, e.g. a vein the flow of blood through needle 22 being stopped, when observed in hub 25, 28, by a plug 27. After straightening of member 12 on removal of needle 22, the catheter 31, provided with a hub 33 and shielding envelope 39, 41, can be advanced into the vein via catheter 10 until hub 35 engages in a socket in a hub 13. The two catheters may then be withdrawn from the vein together until catheter 10 is outside but part of catheter 31 is inside the vein. Removal of envelope 39, 41 and a plug 36 then allows connection of hub 33 to, e.g. a syringe. In the other form, Figure 4, (not shown) wherein hub 13 is adapted for connection to a syringe or a liquid-administration set, the needle 22 has a lateral opening (58) allowing liquid to flow into the vein before withdrawal of the needle 22. The apparatus may also be used for drainage of the bladder.
