Abstract

1330976 Cutting keys COLE NATIONAL CORP 11 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 52469/71 Headings B3B and B3K A key-cutting machine comprises a master key vice 16, and a blank vice 17, a stylus 18, a rotary cutter 19 and means for moving cutter 19 longitudinally and laterally in accordance with movement of the stylus; the cutter and stylus being mounted on a carriage 21 which is moved to the left during cutting, Fig. 1, by a yieldable drive means, and is moved to the right after cutting by a positive drive means. Carriage 21 is pivotable about and slidable along, a shaft 22, and cutter 19 is rotatable with a shaft 26 mounted on the carriage 21, the shaft being driven by a motor 28 through a belt drive 31, 32, 27. A motor 29 drives a cam 36, Fig. 8, through a gear reduction mechanism 35, and the cam co-operates with two followers 37, 38, follower 38 being axially fixed on shaft 22, and follower 37, being slidable on the shaft and connected to follower 38 by springs 39. A brush assembly 45, Fig. 6, is provided to remove burrs from the cut key 13, and comes into operation during the movement of carriage 21 to the right, Fig. 1. Assembly 45 comprises a first arm 48 adapted to be pivoted and axially slidable on shaft 22, and a second arm 49 connected to arm 48 by a pivot 50 and spring 51, relative pivoting movement of the arms being caused by a rotary cam 53 fixed on cutter shaft 26, such movement bringing brush 46 into or out of engagement with key 13. The machine has a transparent door 61, Fig. 2, which co-operates with a cover 62 to enclose the mechanism of the machine, but this door can be moved to the open Fig. 4 position by pivoting it about a pivot 63, so that the carriage 21 is in an inoperative position and a switch 72 is actuated so as to stop cutter motor 28. In operation, a master key 12 and blank 13 are placed in vices 16, 17, with door 61 open, the keys being clamped by handle 23. Door 61 is pivoted to the Fig. 1 position, so that the cutter and stylus are pivoted into the working position. Motor 28 drives cutter 19, motor 29 rotates cam 36, and due to its engagement with followers 37, 38, carriage 21 is moved to the left, Fig. 1. If there is an unforeseen obstacle to the movement of the stylus or cutter, springs 39 will extend and prevent damage. At the end of the cutting operation the low point on cam 36 engages fixed follower 38 and carriage 21 will be moved to the right, Fig. 1. During this movement brush mechanism 46 comes into play to remove the burrs from key 13. At the end of this movement door 61 is opened, handles 23 are raised, and the keys 12, 13 are removed.
