1330163 Measuring velocity and particle size BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd [28 April 1971] 28 April 1970 20417/70 Addition to 1182658 Heading G1A In the method and apparatus of the parent the photo-dectector output is compared with an unmodulated reference signal derived from the coherent light source to obtain a demodulated output substantially free from noise or beat frequencies associated with the source. The detector for the reference beam may receive light from the back of the laser or a beam splitter may be introduced into the beam path. One of the two paths providing the fringes may include a plate rotating by 90 degrees the plane of polarization and the detector of the one path in such an arrangement includes a 45 degrees plate to produce the unmodulated reference signal. The comparator may comprise a differential amplifier and means for inverting the polarity of one of the inputs.
