Abstract
1327040 Change-speed control; electric switches C A V Ltd 23 Nov 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60186/69 Heading F2D [Also in Division H1] A motor-vehicle ball-mounted gear shift lever 21 is movable in a gate from a central neutral position to any one of a number of micro-switch 28 operating positions for controlling five forward ratios and one reverse ratio, an auxiliary position, and to a further micro-switch 28 operating position for controlling the operation of the doors of the vehicle. The ball-end 18 of the gear lever 21 is seated in a sperical shell-like bearing member 16 which is mounted for rocking movement by means of pins 22 integral therewith, a stop tab 29 integral with the bearing member 16 being moved to block the centre neutral slot during movement of the gear shift lever 21 into fifth gear (Fig. 1) whereby downshift movement of the gear lever 21 from fifth gear can only be into the fourth gear position, such movement serving to pivot the bearing member 16 about its pivot pins 22 to retract the stop tab 29 to thereby allow further unlimited movement of the shift lever for selection of the lower gear ratios, &c., movement of the shift lever into first ratio, the door operating position, reverse and the auxiliary position being possible only after manually raising a spring loaded gear lever knob 36 to lift a latch sleeve 30 first clear of steps 33, 34 for first ratio and the door operating position, and then further lifted clear of steps 35, 37 for reverse and the auxiliary position repsectively, the steps being formed at the edges of the gate housing 14. A spring loaded detent ball 20 in a spigot 19 of the ball-ended shift lever 21 engages detent grooves 24 and 23, 25, corresponding to the neutral and gear-establishing positions, &c. of the shift lever 21, and further, spring urges the ball-end 18 into maintaining engagement with the bearing shell 16.
