Abstract

1325872 Spinning ADAMSON & HATCHETT Ltd and THORN AUTOMATION Ltd 3 Sept 1970 [23 July 1969] 37132/69 Heading B3J [Also in Division G3] In a metal-working machine, for forming a disc-shaped metal plate clamped between a member 2 and an upper member not shown, the forming is carried out between a quadrant roller 4 and a die roller 6. The speed of rotation of the plate is determined by a retroactively controlled electric motor 8. The roller 4 is mounted on a toothed quadrant 14, which is driven through a worm, by an electric motor 15 retroactively controlled in dependence on the position of a linear potentiometer 64. The quadrant 14 is mounted on a carriage 18 and vertically displaced by a feed screw 24 driven by an electric motor 22 and horizontally displaced by a feed screw 26 driven by an electric motor 28. The motors are retroactively controlled in response to sine and cosine signals from potentiometers 42, 44. The potentiometers 42, 44, 64 are driven in synchronism by an electric motor 84 so that the quadrant roller 4 is moved tangentially over a circular arc. The radius of the arc is determined by the voltage applied to the potentiometers 42, 44 and the quadrant roller is maintained in a correct position relative to the die roller through a subtractor 56. The position of the die roller is determined by a digital signal from a matrix system 72 retroactively controlling an electric motor 32 driving a feed-screw 34. The movement of the quadrant roller 4 is limited to an arc of a circle by a trip-device 86 responsive to a comparison of signals from the potentiometer 64 and a potentiometer 88 set to the angle to the horizontal at which the quadrant roller should form the plate; the forming commencing when the result of the comparison is a zero signal and continuing until the roller 4 is vertical.
