Abstract
1325615 Polymers of aziridine compounds and dyes CASSELLA FARBWERKE MAINKUR AG 20 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 10092/71 Addition to 1234710 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Water-soluble dyes are produced by reacting an aziridine compound with a dye or dye intermediate having a substituent thereon which is reactive with the aziridine compound either by addition or substitution and reacting the resulting intermediate with further of said aziridine at 60-120‹ C. with a catalytic amount of an acid catalyst or an alkylating agent whereby polymerization occurs and opening of the aziridine ring of said intermediate is effected if such a ring is still present. The aziridine compounds include aziridine, C 1-4 alkyl-substituted aziridine wherein the alkyl group may be substituted by an aryl or a cyano group, acetyl-aziridine, carboxamido - aziridine and carbmethoxyaziridine. The preferred dye is an anthraquinone, perylene, phthalocyanine, styryl, stilbene, di- or triarylmethane, methene, polymethene, azine, oxazine, thiazine, dioxazine, perinone, naphthoquinone, indigo, quinophthalone, pyrazolone, aminopyrazol, xanthene, acridine, quinoline, cyanine, azomethene or a monodis or polyazo dye. Numerous preferred substituents are listed for the dye or dye intermediate which is reactive with the aziridine compound. Examples of acid catalysts and alkylating agents include halogen hydracids, carboxylic acid, sulphonic acid, aluminium chloride, borofluoride, borofluorodietherate, dialkyl-sulphate, alkylhalides such as ethylene chloride, epichlorohydrin, SO 2 and CO 2 . Typical dye intermediates include those which contain hydroxyl and/or amino groups i.e. naptholsulphonic acids, aminonaphtholsulphonic acids and aminonaphthalene sulphonic acids. The polymers obtained by the above process using the dye intermediates may be converted into dyes by coupling with a diazo compound. Numerous examples are given. Uses.-Dyeing cellulosic materials, e.g. paper.
