Abstract

1321270 Moulded golf ball covers BRUNSWICK CORP 19 Oct 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 49487/70 Heading A6D [Also in Division B5] A golf ball core 16 is placed in a dimpled mould and a curable, liquid, plastics is injected and allowed to partially cure to give a preform with a thin skin 18 having nipples 20 of a height substantially equal to the final thickness of the golf-ball cover; the preform is placed in a second mould with the nipples centring it therein, and a curable, liquid plastics 22 is injected and allowed to partially cure: the ball is removed from the mould and the cureing is comleted at room temperature. The outer covering 22 is thicker than the skin 18 and the curing produces a chemical bond between the two. The plastics may be a thermosetting, liquid polyurethane elastomer having terminal isocyanate groups, and a curing agent, e.g. a polyamine such as a sterically hindered aromatic diamine, may be used. The core may be of wound rubber and may be dipped in rubber latex and cooled prior to coating. Examples of moulding and curing temperatures and plastics composition are given. The moulds may be coated with a release agent. The plastics may contain pigment, fillers or plasticizers. Specification 1321269 is referred to.
