Abstract

1314588 Opening filaments; forming filamentous webs METALL GESELLSCHAFT AG 16 July 1970 [17 July 1969] 34625/70 Headings D1F and D1N [Also in Division F1] Extruded filaments are spread, preparatory to their deposition in the form of a fleece on a support, by passage through apparatus comprising a vertical drawing nozzle, through which the filaments are drawn off and stretched by the action of a gaseous entraining medium, e.g. air or steam, flowing therefrom at supersonic speed, at the end of which is mounted a spreading element having an inlet of circular cross-section and an outlet of elongated rectangular cross-section below each end of which is at least one deflector. The deflectors are spaced apart and extend perpendicularly to the larger dimension of the outlet and the mutually facing inner surfaces are so shaped that gas entraining the filaments and carrying them through the nozzle and spreading element is deflected towards the inner surfaces of the deflectors, whereby the filaments will be spread. The longitudinal edge of the outlet of the spreading element may have the form of rounded lips, see also Figs. 2 (a), 2 (b) (not shown). The deflector working surfaces may be plane or curved, converging and then diverging, with intermediate and/or terminal portions in which they are parallel, and may have rounded upper, and sharp trailing, edges. Two pairs of deflectors may be mounted so as to react successively with the gas stream, see also Figs. 3 (a)-(d) (not shown). Reciprocating movements may be imparted to the filaments and the entraining gas, parallel and relative to the support in order to lay down a filamentous mat. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 (a), an entraining gas flow from a driving nozzle 1 is converted to a spread form in an element 2. Deflectors 4, connected to element 2 by ribs 7, direct the flow further outwards to the lower edge 8 and the expanding stream draws air from the surrounding atmosphere over edges 6.
