Abstract

1305684 Colour television tubes ZENITH RADIO CORP 18 June 1971 28635/71 Heading H1D In the manufacture of an opaque layer separating the phosphor dots of a colour television screen, the faceplate 10 of the tube is coated with a continuous opaque layer 11 on which is deposited a photoresist layer 12; this is exposed through a shadow mask 13 by an annular light source so as to leave unexposed dot areas 12a smaller than apertures 13a in the shadow mask and corresponding to the positions of the dots of one colour, and the unexposed areas are removed by a solvent; the opaque areas thus exposed are removed by another solvent and the exposed areas of the photoresist are then removed, and the whole process is repeated for the other colours. The layer 11 may contain a black inorganic pigment or an inorganic material such as manganous carbonate which converts to a pigment (manganese dioxide) on bake-out, and may be included in an acrylic binder soluble in toluene. The layer 12 is preferably an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and ammonium dichromate. After the opaque layer has been deposed the phosphor areas may be deposited by a slurry process, dusting or by electrophotographic deposition. In a modification, the exposed polyvinyl alcohol layer in the last step is not removed as described above so that some phosphor dots are deposited over it, and it is removed in the baking step.
