Abstract

1293737 Aerials; generating oscillations SPERRY RAND CORP 27 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 17369/71 Headings H3B and H4A A high frequency impulse is directionally radiated from a balanced horn antenna 3, Fig. 4, forming part of and terminating a balanced strip transmission line 14, 14a, each time the other end of the line is bridged by a switch 23 through resistors r/2, the line being charged through resistors R/2 from a voltage source 21. The switch may be an electromagneticallycontrolled mercury-wetted reed which is operated from a pulse generator 24 or modulated pulse source. Closure of the switch causes a negative voltage wave to travel along the line to the radiating antenna, the reflected wave being absorbed by resistors r/2 which together equal the characteristic impedance of the line. The transmission line is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises parallel strips 4, 4a, and a matched balanced horn portion 3 consisting of diverging planar members 2, 2a terminated by either flat or curved ends 8, 8a. The members are either spaced by dielectric spacers 10, 10a or an air formed dielectric filling may be used. In a modification, Fig. 9, the parallel portion of the transmission line is screened by a conductive sleeve 30 held at mid-potential by a capacitor voltage divider 33, 34, 33a, 34a. In a further modification, Fig. 14, the switch 23 is replaced by one or more avalanche transistors 50, 50a, the arrangement being then free-running.
