Abstract

1283922 Tube expanders; welding COUNTY RIVERWAY BOILERS Ltd 15 Oct 1969 [16 July, 1968 and 2 Oct 1968] 33892/68 and 46827/68 Headings B3J and B3R [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for truing and aligning the opposed ends of a pair of pipes comprises a plurality of shaping and aligning heads movable by at least one power-operated mandrel to engage the mouths of the pipes internally, the heads being in two groups each for engaging only one of the pipes. The heads may be provided with rollers for contacting the pipe-ends, movement of the heads being self-terminating by means of bypass valves or micro-switches. The apparatus may be centred in a pipe by six or eight wheels in two axially-spaced groups, the wheels being expanded by hydraulic or pneumatic power and returned by springs. The or each mandrel is advanced by fluid pressure and returned by fluid pressure or by a spring. The mandrels may produce a fast initial movement of the heads and a slower following movement. Springs and/or power means may retract the shaping heads. In an example, Fig. 1 (not shown), the apparatus trails a battery and is mounted on wheels or a track driven by a motor. Ahead of the apparatus is an electric-powered control transporter with four control cords, one for operating a switch for starting, stopping and reversing the travel motor, a second for operating a switch initiating expansion of the centring wheels, a third for initiating expansion of the shaping heads and a fourth for cancelling the second and third functions. A micro-switch stops the transporter at the end of a pipe. A control rod or electric control cables may supplement or replace the cords, or the transporter may be dispensed with. Instead of using a battery trailer, external electric and fluid pressure supplies may be used. A rubber tyre protects the forward end of the apparatus. If two oppositely acting mandrels are used, Fig. 2, each controlling a separate group of heads 102, 202, the groups may be expanded one after the other so that centring wheels may be dispensed with, the heads being returned by levers 103, 203 operated by the mandrels.
