Abstract
1281285 Water kites DORNIER SYSTEM GmbH 25 Feb 1970 [25 Feb 1969] 9038/70 Heading B7A A towed or self-propelled underwater device for carrying measuring instruments comprises a transversely extending body 1 in the form of a wing of small aspect ratio with a compartment 7<SP>1</SP> for the instruments, and a removable tail 40 with transverse fins 47 which are adjusted by a remote-controlled servo motor 42 to control the angle of incidence of the body, and hence its depth. The body has a weighted keel, Fig. 1 (not shown), and the tail incorporates vertical stabilizing fins. Tow rope 17 incorporates cables for transmitting control signals to the servo motor and data from the measuring instruments. Arms 12 connected to the tow rope are attached to body 1 by pins 9 mounted in longitudinal recesses, so that the point of action of the towing force can be adjusted to be forward of the upward or downward force on the body. If the servo motor control fails, fins 47 move to a neutral position. Body 1 is buoyant to prevent loss of the device should the two rope break.
