Abstract
1279736 Chromatographic apparatus; contact apparatus RESEARCH CORP 9 Sept 1969 44536/69 Addition to 1175736 Headings B1F and B1X Cylinders 214, 216 are coaxially mounted so as to define between the cylinders and annular passage 212 which is 0.00004-0.25 in. wide. The surfaces of cylinders 214, 216 defining the passage are coated with a suitable chromatographic adsorbent which may in turn be coated with a suitable liquid stationary phase, such as dioctyl phthalate (applied as a 5% solution in benezene). The mixture to be separated is passed along line 238, through slip ring 240 and through one or more of inlets 248a, b, c &c. in the upper wall of outer cylinder 216. Carrier gas flows along line 222 and through passage 212 via passages 230, 232, causing the components of the mixture to be separated in time in arriving at one or more of outlets 260a, b, c &c. located in the lower wall of outer cylinder 216, and which connect with corresponding output lines 258a, b, c, &c. through silp ring 250. The apparatus may be used for continuous preparative separation by rotating the unit through the agency of drive belt 270 and pulley 266, such rotation causing successive doses of mixture to be deposited at the top of passageway 212 as apertures 248a, b, c, &c. come successively into alignment input line 238 through slip ring 240. By suitable adjustment of the rate of rotation, particular components of the mixture may be removed through particular apertures 260a, b, c, &c. as they come into alignment with particular output lines 256a, b, c, &c. through slip ring 250. Using such an apparatus, the separation of a benzene/toluene mixture at 120C. is described, using helium as carrier gas. In another embedment (see Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), a similar unit in which the cylindrical surfaces are replaced by frusto-conical surfaces is described. The apparatus may be adapted to operate as a catalytic reactor in which the catalyst is the coating on the cylindrical or frusto-conical surfaces. Such a reactor is of particular application in reactions in which either the equilibrium constant is low or in which a product is strongly adsorbed by the catalyst by removing the product from the reaction site.
