Abstract
1279076 Handling radioactive material ISRAEL ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION STATE OF 4 June 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 19059/71 Heading B4Q Apparatus for the storage of radioactive objects comprises a cylindrical drum 6 mounted for rotation about an axle 7 within a cylindrical casing 1, a plurality of radially directed cavities 8 in axially spaced tiers and angularly spaced columns, an elongate opening 11 formed in the casing 1, a motor 14 connected to the drum 6 by gearing 15 so as successively to bring successive cavity columns opposite the opening 11, and a plurality of individual closure means 12 associated with the opening 11 and respectively adapted to close the cavities 8 otherwise exposed by the opening 11. The casing 1 is formed of lead with a stainless steel outer coating and is securely mounted on a concrete base 5. The drum 6 is also formed of lead. Where the object to be stored is a radioactive needle, this is located in a recess 21 formed in a cylindrical lead slug 22 (Fig. 1a) which is inserted in a cavity 8 in the drum 6 with the recess 21 located in an innermost position. Suitable selector means are provided which when set with respect to a particular cavity will cause the drum to rotate so that the column in which the cavity is located will be positioned opposite the opening, whereupon the closure means closing the cavity will be opened. Alternatively, rotation of the drum can be effected manually as can the opening of each individual closure means.
