Abstract

1275711 Plate heat exchangers APV CO Ltd 24 Nov 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 1241/70 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger in which a pack of separable gasketed plates are assembled face-to-face so that fluid passages each bounded by a gasket are formed between the plates for one fluid flowing in alternate passages in heat exchange with another fluid flowing in the remaining passages, transmitting means for a signal are provided in each plate at a point outside the area bounded by the gasket, the transmitting means in alternate plates differing from that in the remaining plates such that the respective transmitting means co-operate to form a complete signal path through the pack only if the plates have been assembled in their correct order, e.g. after being dismantled for cleaning &c. The intention is to prevent undesirable contamination of the fluid passages due to incorrect assembly of the plates. The transmitting means shown comprises angled holes 7 formed in grommets 6, 9 (see also Figs. 4, 5) affixed respectively in the adjacent plates 1, 3 of the pack, the holes forming a flow path 10 (when the plates are correctly assembled) for a jet of gas or liquid, absence of which may be utilized to prevent operation of valves or pumps &c. by which the heat exchanging fluids are circulated through the pack. Additional transmitting means may comprise electrical or magnetic conductors or holes forming a straight path for a visible light signal.
