An apparatus for packing filled tubes 6 having end closure fins into rectangular boxes 25 includes two stepwise driven cords or chains 2, 3 for conveying the tubes 6 to a packing station, tongs 5, each of which is vertically displaceable on two guide bars 4 mounted between the chains 2, 3, a stepwise driven rotary table 16 having retaining fingers, 15, Fig. 5, for gripping boxes 25, and an actuating mechanism for the tongs 5 such that when each tube 6 reaches the packing station a tong 5 moves vertically downwards and inserts a tube 6 into a box 25 such that the end closure fin of the tube 6 is located diagonally of the box 25. The tubes are supplied to the tongs via a rotary table 1. That part of each pair of tongs 5 guided on the bars 4 has a stop jaw, 7<SP>1</SP> Fig. 3, which abuts against a stop 7<SP>11</SP> on the bars 4 in its lowest position. A gripping jaw 7 is pivoted to the stop jaw 7<SP>1</SP> and biased towards this jaw 7<SP>1</SP> by a spring 5<SP>1</SP>. A guide element rigidly connected to the gripping jaw consists of a radially inwardly directed arm 8 on end of which is a roller 9 that runs on a fixed guide rail 10 when the tongs are conveyed horizontally. A forked shifting element 12 located at each of the transfer or packaging stations, and guided on a bar 4<SP>1</SP> can engage the roller 9 and move the tongs between their upper and lower positions. Furthermore this shifting element 12 by downward pressure on the roller 9 causes the jaws of the tongs to open when in their lowest position. The rotary table 16 consists of two identical rotary wheels 31 and 32 arranged on a common shaft so as to be relatively axially displaceable. Each of the rotary wheels 31, 32 comprises three parallel rotary discs 35, 36, 37, Fig. 6, the two outer rotary discs 35 and 37 being rotatably adjustable relative to the inner rotary disc (36) to receive boxes of different sizes. This adjusting device consists of two coaxial nuts 40, 41, secured respectively to the outer rotary discs 35, 37 engaged by a pin 39 having a right-hand and left-hand screw threads respectively. To maintain a parallel relationship between the retaining fingers of each pair, each finger 15 has an angled inner end 46 abutting respective curved cams 45 secured to the inner rotary disc 36. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 7 and 8) the tongs 5 are provided with V-shaped jaws for receiving and compressing the opens ends of tubes. A heating rail (52) extends along part of the upper conveying chain 2 and is followed by an intermittently operable tool (54) for compressing and welding the heated upper edges of the tube together. A cooling device (56) is provided downstream of the pressing tool (54).
