Abstract

126,766. Baur, E., and Treadwell, W. D. March 16, 1918. Carbon - consuming cells; absorbents. - The electrodes in a carbcn - consuming cell bear directly against one or more diaphragms which are saturated with a molten salt. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the combustible electrode consists of coke 2 contained in an iron receiver 1. Upon the coke is a diaphragm 3 of burnt magnesia saturated with melted soda. The other electrode consists of iron gauze 4 covered with slag, forge scales, or iron oxide 5 contained in a bell 6 having air supply and discharge pipes 7, 8. The cell in operation is placed in a chamber heated to about 900‹ C. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which air and an inflammable gas such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, water or lighting gas are led respectively through pipes 13 into magnesia tubes 11 lined with iron gauze 12. The tubes are placed in melted soda 10 in an iron receiver 9. The cell is heated as described above, the two pieces of gauze 12 serving as electrodes. Specifications 8906/96, 2272/97, and 15903/97 are referred to.
