Abstract

1,267,351 Moulding plastics. CALMEC EXTRUFORM Ltd. 6 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11484/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions A4 and F4] Tooling apparatus, for forming an opentopped container having a skirt depending from the rim to form a heat-insulating member, comprises a first female die 69, the 'interior of which may be connected to atmospheric pressure or vacuum via bores 81, the die 'being slidable within a bore 35, within which it may be retracted or projected, a peripheral clamp 25 to hold a sheet 100 of thermoplastic material over the die, a knife arrangement 27 to engage the sheet 100 between the die and the clamp, the interior surface of the knife defining the skirt of the finished container, a second female die 23 also having passages to connect its interior to atmospheric pressure or vacuum, the second die being movable to engage the knife, and define a mould cavity when thus -engaged, and a reciprocably movable assist plug 137 which may be projected into the first die to assist in forming the side and base walls of the container, as shown in Fig. 9. In operation the sheet 100 is clamped over the first die 69 which is projected upwards as shown in Fig. 6. The knife member is brought down on to the clamp, and the second die also and atmospheric pressure used to form the skirt against the interior 117 of the knife. The sheet is then forced against the interior of the second die to form the rim, and the assist plug projected into the first die to cause the sheet to form the side walls 'and base against the interior of the first die. Both vacuum and atmospheric pressure assist in this operation. The second die is then removed, the knife member caused to sever the sheet, and the finished container ejected from the first die.
