Abstract

1,267,234. Photo-electric illumination control. LUMINA S.P.R.L. Feb.13, 1969 [Feb. 13, 1968; Nov.21, 1968; Dec.27, 1968; Jan.20, 1969], No.7937/69. Heading G1A. In a lighting system the light from a discharge tube 102, Fig. 1, which is energized by a capacitor 100, is extinguished by an electronic switch 103 actuated in response to the output from a detector 104 and integrator 105 which generate a signal when a predetermined amount of light has been received. The electronic switch may alternatively shunt the tube, and, when the source is a photographic flash-gun, the detector may respond to light reflected from the subject. The source may be a gas tube fixed by a condenser discharge, or a laser, and the switching element may be a semiconductor such as a thyristor, a thyratron, or for shunting purposes, a cold-electrode gas-filled arrestor tube. The flash-gun arrangement may be combined with and actuated by a camera, and may include electrical or mechano-optical means for varying the sensitivity of the detector in respect of the quantity of light effecting operation. The electronic switch may include a visual monitoring device by means of which light from the electronic switch is led to the outside of the casing by a fibre optic. Various transistor switching circuits are described some including an induction coil to prevent the build up of voltage across the flash-tube after switch off in order to allow for the tube to de-ionize, and the photo-sensitive cells may be photo-resistive, photo-voltaic, or photo-diodes or transistors.
