Abstract
1,265,471. Extruding gypsum. BPB INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [23 Nov., 1967], No. 53415/67. Heading B5A. In a method of extruding gypsum, a mix of gypsum and water is adjusted such that a predetermined time after contacting the plaster with water the mix attains a degree of stiffening enabling it to retain its extruded cross-section. Preferably a synthetic resin such as ureaformaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylate, or a copolymer of monomers which include the residue of a synthetic, predominantly tertiary, carboxylic acid with other monomers such as vinyl acetate, is added to the mix by an amount from 2¢-10% by weight of plaster. Such resins act both as a reinforcement in the final product and a lubricant for the mix during extrusion, the lower extrusion pressure thereby required facilitating the production of a low density product. Other additives mentioned, in addition to conventional retarders, accelerators and setting stabilizers and a conventional aggregate such as sand, are lightweight aggregates such as perlite, vermiculite, granular polystyrene and ureaformaldehyde foam in an amount not exceeding 20% by weight of the plaster, fibrous reinforcing material such as chopped textile fibres, wood pulp, polypropylene and mineral fibres and glass fibres, modifying agents such as cellulose ethers and clay such as bentonite in an amount from 5-35% by weight of the plaster. It is stated that the lightweight aggregate under relatively high extrusion pressures may act as a lubricant. To further reduce the density of the product, the mix may be received on a conveyer belt and be delivered thereby to a drying chamber. Three examples are given.
