Abstract

1,252,306. Hypodermic syringes. ASTRA CHEMICALS Ltd. 28 Aug., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 42904/69. Heading A5R. A self-aspirating syringe, for use with a plunger-type cartridge ampoule 10 closed at one end by a movable piston and sealed at the other end by a resilient membrane 12, comprises a body member 17, a plunger 37 having a head 38 on its forward end and a manually engageable actuator 39 on its rear end, and an adapter 21 within a front opening of the body member 17 supporting a hypodermic needle 25, the adapter 21. having a central abutment 22 integral or associated therewith and disposed inside the body member 17 for deforming the ampoule membrane inwards of the front face of the ampoule. The plunger 37 is surrounded by a bushing 32 in which it is freely slidable. The bushing also being freely slidable inside a gland 30 which is in threaded engagement with a sleeve 29. There is also provided on the bushing a bushing head 33 adapted to engage the rear end of the cartridge ampoule and push the ampoule forwardly, and a spring 36, surrounding the bushing along its length between the head 33 and the inside rear edge of the gland 30, to urge the bushing forwards. The head 38 of the plunger may be received in a recess 40 in the flanged head 33. When an ampoule is placed in the syringe through a longitudinal slot (not shown) in the body 17, the spring 36 urges the head 33 against the ampoule, pushing it forwards, so that the needle pierces the resilient membrane 12. Depression of the plunger causes further forward movement of the ampoule until a flange 15 protecting the membrane 12 is in contact with the adapter 21 and the membrane is deformed by the abutment 22. Upon release of the plunger the ampoule is restored to its normal position due to the resilient action of the membrane. Alternatively the abutment (41) may be part of the needle (Fig. 5 not shown).
