1,250,452. Multiplex signalling. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Dec., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43692/67. Heading H4R. In a multi-channel frequency division multiplex transmission system a circuit is switched between a full circuit bandwidth channel when the channel is active and a reduced bandwidth channel when the channel is idle. As described two terminal stations 5 and 6 are interconnected via a cable 9 carrying an equal number of 3 kHz wide channels and 1 kHz wide channels in each direction. Subscribers T 1 and T 2 are connected to the terminal station via switching devices operated by a speech detector so that while a subscriber is active, i.e. talking, he is connected to a 3 kHz channel and while he is idle, i.e. listening to the other party to the conversation, he will be connected to a 1 kHz channel. Operation of the speech detector causes the transmission of a control signal to indicate to which channel the other party to the conversation is to be connected to receive the signals.
