Abstract

1,249,820. Container traffic. AMERICAN EXPORT ISBRANDTSEN LINES Inc. 13 June, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 30163/69. Heading B8Q. [Also in Division E2] An upper layer of .containers C, Fig. 5, are secured to the deck of a ship, or other loadbearing platform, by corner couplings 15 mounted on beams 19 pivoted to links 17 which are themselves pivoted to supports 10 mounted on the deck. The beams 19 extend transversely of the containers which have their long axes aligned fore and aft. The bottom layer of containers is secured to the hatch covers of the ship by corner couplings 15a, Fig. 3. The beams 19 are pivoted to the links 17 so that they are able to align themselves on top of containers of different heights. If containers of one height only are to be used the beams may be rigidly attached to the links. The links 17 are raised by rams 21, 22 to facilitate loading and unloading of the containers. The corner couplings on each beam 19 are simultaneously rotated between operative and inoperative positions by rams 26, Fig. 1, rods 25 and links 23. The rams may be hydraulic or pneumatic.
