Abstract

1,244,699. Acoustic inspection of wood. WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION. 27 Aug., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 42680/69. Heading H4D. A wood specimen is graded according to mechanical properties determined by impacting the specimen and timing the propagation of the resulting energy wave along at least a preselected portion of the specimen. As shown, a log, veneer or plank S is supported by a clamp 10, 14 and roller and is struck by hammer 11. The wave propagation time for the portion between sensors 16, 17 is determined by timer 18 and between sensors 21, 22 by timer 23. From these times, and the dimensions and density of the specimen, the wave velocity and dynamic modulus of elasticity (either for the portions separately or as an average over the whole specimen) may be computed in a memory circuit actuating a grade marker. Weak portions may be identified from their wave velocities. The sensors may be of the contact-type (e.g. accelerometers) or non-contact type (e.g. shrouded conductors for detecting charges generated by the piezoelectric effect in wood).
