Abstract

1,242,374. Surgical retractors. J. R. WILDER and M. S. KANBAR. 26 Feb, 1970 [26 Feb., 1969], No. 9448/70. Heading A5R. A hand held surgical retractor of a resilient, high-strength plastics material having a non- reflective surface comprises a blade 12, a handle 13 and a shank 14 interconnecting the handle to the blade, the blade 12 being slightly concave with respect to the tissue and having an array of apertures 15 such that when pressure is applied, small knobs of tissue enter the apertures thus preventing slip or displacement of the blade. The handle 13 is inclined downwardly with respect to the shank, its underside corrugated to provide a finger grip, reinforcement of the handle and shank being provided by ribs 13A, 13B and 14A, 14B respectively. The handle may be provided with thumb grips (22, 23), or with an elongated opening (26) for the fingers.
