Abstract
1,240,301. Mould materials. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 25 Sept., 1969 [3 Oct., 19681, No. 47040/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A sand mould is provided at one or more locations with lining pads formed of a composition comprising refractory fibrous material and a binder, the pads either forming or being only slightly remote from the metal-contacting surface of the mould cavity. The refractory fibrous material may be calcium silicate or aluminosilicate fibres, slag wool, rock wool or mineral wool and a refractory filler such as silica, alumina, crushed coke, grog, talc, diatomaceous earth, expanded vermiculite, expanded perlite or silicon carbide may also be included. Suitable binders are sodium silicate, resins, colloidal silica sol and aluminium acetate. The surface of the pad facing the mould cavity may be provided with a protective layer of a refractory material or with a layer of exothermic composition. The pads are made flexible and compressible so as to absorb thermal stresses set up on cooling. The moulds are made by applying to a pattern one or more of the pads, subsequently applying around the pattern a moulding sand composition, hardening the sand mould and pad and stripping the resulting mould and inserted pad from the pattern. The pads are located at those parts in the mould where the cross-section of the mould cavity is relatively small.
