Abstract
1,239,667. Hydraulic damper; lip seals. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 14 April, 1970 [18 April, 1969], No. 19982/69. Addition to 1,125,104. Headings F2B and F2S. The seal, bleed holes and automatic valves of the hydraulic damper of Specification 1,125,104 are modified. The piston 2 of the damper works in a tube 1; within a tube 6 providing communication from one side of the piston to the other via bleed holes 13 in the tube 1; within a valve-controlled reservoir tube 7. The seal comprises a multi-lip sealing ring 32 which is embraced by a spring ring 33 and has a flange 35 which is urged against a retaining flange 30 by a coil spring 34. The bleed holes 13, instead of being of constant cross-section as in the earlier patent, have a larger cross-section at the outside of tube wall 1 then the inside. This is stated to make the damping effect less temperature sensitive. Stacks 19, 24 of annular flexible valve elements are provided in the piston and at the entrance to the reservoir for overload relief. On compression strokes, the valve in the piston opens before the one in the base. The upper eye end of the damper is detachable. A square 38 machined on the pistonrod 3 engages a broached hole in the dust shield plate 39. The eye end is locked relative to the rod and plate by a tab washer.
