Abstract

1,237,508. Rear view mirrors. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1969, No. 41665/69. Heading B7J. An adjustable interior breakaway rear view mirror 10, is mounted on a stem 11, the stem being secured by a layer of adhesive to a bracket 13 which is adapted to be fixed by screws to a motor vehicle header bar. A film of adhesive 15 is applied to the flat area 12 of the end of the stem 11 and to a flat area 14 of the bracket 13. A controlled breakaway force can be applied by varying the sizes of the flat areas 12, 14. Vibration of the mirror, when in use, is minimized by a hollow, collapsible rubber steady 16 mounted on the stem 11 and engaging the vehicle windscreen 17. If an occupant of the vehicle is thrown against the mirror the stem 11 breaks away from the bracket 13 regardless of the direction of the forces applied to the mirror or to the free end of the stem.
