1,236,888. Bis (#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate polycondensation catalyst. M. & T. CHEMICALS Inc. 3 Oct., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 48688/69. Heading C3R. Polyethylene terephthalate is made by polymerizing bis (#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate using as a catalyst an antimony alcoholate where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals which may be substituted by inert substituents e.g. alkoxy, halogen nitro or ester groups. An ester interchange reaction between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol using calcium or zinc acetate as a catalyst produces the bis (#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate.
