Abstract

1,226,540. Radiation thermometer. MULLARD Ltd. Aug. 7, 1968 [Dec. 12, 1967], No.56405/67. Heading G1A. The temperature of a body is measured in an arrangement including a clockwork driven apertured disc 2 whereby radiation from the body passing through a light pipe 1 falls on a detector 4 alternately with radiation from the disc itself which is at ambient temperature, correction for the ambient being made by adding in unit 12 a second signal of the same frequency to the amplified output of detector 4 developed by the disc apertures between a gallium arsenide source 7 and a detector 8 and modified in respect of the ambient temperature by a temperature sensitive resistor. The temperature is displayed by a meter 14 after phase-sensitive rectification in unit 10. The detector 4 which may be of indium antimonids responds to infrared and a filter 3 is included in the path. A circuit in which the detector 4 is connected in series with the light source 7 and in which a Zener diode is included is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown). A full transistor circuit including a resistor for adjusting the symmetry of the correcting signal is also described. The arrangement is said to be suitable for measuring temperatures close to ambient and its use as a clinical thermometer is suggested.
