Abstract

1,221,891. Bowling scorer. AMF Inc. 7 May, 1969 [14 May, 1968], No. 22809/68. Headings G4A and G4D. In a bowling scoring system a frame-by-frame history of the game, with progressive player and team scores, is displayed on a cathode-ray tube, Fig. 3, there being one tube per team. A 61 step computer programme is described for accepting the various constants, such as handicaps and blind scores, to perform the necessary score calculations in accordance with the ABC Rules for bowls. A special purpose computer is outlined using a magnetostrictive circulating delay line store of sufficient length to store the outcome of each ball bowled, and the progressive player and team scores, for a complete game. Normally the contents of the whole delay line are displayed, as in Fig. 3, but the programme does incorporate the "superstition factor" so that during a run of successive strikes some frames are not displayed. The C.R.T. displays use a basic figure eight format for each number, and data for the two tubes is interlaced in the delay line so that whilst one beam is being positioned, the other is writing. The contents of the delay line may be read out to a printer or to a tape recorder.
