Abstract

1,221,488. Fibrillating foamed polyethylene. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 23 June, 1969 [11 July, 1968], No. 33033/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A high density polyethylene (e.g. density # 0À935 g./c.c.) containing 10-25% by wt. of a foaming agent is extruded at 125-160‹C. into a foamed strand or ribbon which is drawn longitudinally and which may optionally be subjected to forces which rupture the cell-walls leaving a three-dimensional network of interconnected fibres. A nucleating agent may be present. Draw ratios of 2 : 1 to 20 : 1 at a temperature of up to 130‹ C. are specified. Fibrillation may be at 0-30‹ C. using transverse forces, e.g. a turbulent air-stream.
