[Also in Division D1] A sheet-like product is made by depositing bundles of drawn continuous thermoplastic synthetic filaments on a moving support to form a web of randomly intersecting bundles of filaments, and subjecting the web to a superatmospheric pressure whilst the web is held at a temperature below the melting point of the filaments and above the second order transition temperature of the filaments. The temperature may be 3-50‹ C. below the melting point of the filaments. The pressure may be 1-180 kg./ sq. cm. and may be applied by nip rolls and/or by a heated roll over which an endless belt passes. Liner belts which may be embossed or woven may be passed between the endless belt and the filaments and between the filaments and the heated roll. The filament feeding device and the conveyer belt receiving the filaments may be reciprocated transversely to the direction of movement of the belt. There may be 5-50 filaments in the bundles. The filaments may be made of polyamides and polyolefines, especially polypropylene, polyethylene and nylon 6. The sheet-like product may be smooth and largely non-fibrous, porous or fibrous. The latter may be heat-sealed on one or both sides.
