Abstract

1,209,451. Measuring the cornea. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Jan 12, 1968 [Jan. 16, 1967], No. 2237/67. Heading G2J. Apparatus for measuring corneal thickness and corneal radii comprises a low power gas laser 1, preferably a helium-neon gas laser, which directs a light beam on to the cornea of an eye, the person's head being supported by a frame 2; an objective lens 3 and a screen 4 mounted on a graduated optical bench 5. The lens 3 is moved until two images, one from light reflected off the front surface of the cornea and the other from light reflected off the back surface, are simultaneously formed on the screen with the first mentioned image coinciding with the optical axis. The distance between the images and the angle of incidence of the laser beam on the eye are measured, thus enabling the thickness of the cornea to be determined. To find the radii of the cornea, the lens and screen are adjusted until the first image is in focus on the screen. The distances of the lens from the eye and the screen from the lens are measured and the outer corneal radius determined. Similar measurements are made for the second image, and the inner corneal radius is found.
