Abstract

120,558. Barbet et fils et Cie, E. Oct. 11, 1917, [Convention date]. Ammoniacal liquor, treating; tar. - Ammoniacal liquor and products of distillation of coal or peat, &c., are purified from tar by treating them with an organic solvent for tar which is insoluble or only slightly soluble in water. The preferred solvent is cresol; benzene hydrocarbons, carbolic oils, naphthols, petroleum spirit, spirit of turpentine, pine oil, methyl acetate, &c. also may be used. A tower C packed with porcelain balls, quartz, broken glass, coke, &c. is supplied at the bottom with cresol from vessel A and at the top with ammoniacal liquor &c. from vessel B. The purified liquor &c. is withdrawn from the bottom of the tower and the dissolved tar from the top. The tar solution is distilled to recover the solvent of the tar.
