Abstract
1,199,824. Optical range finder. CARL ZEISS JENA VEB. 18 March, 1968, No. 12933/68. Heading H4D. Specification describes an optical range finder of the type wherein amplitude modulated infra-red light from a source 8 is focused on to a distant reflector and the reflected light therefrom is directed to photo-sensitive means 14 via a diaphragm 13 wherein the range of the distant reflector is determined by known means. The invention lies in the provision of a integral mirror/lens combination 3 in the transmitting optics, whereby the optical paths are shortened and easily attained spherical surfaces for the mirror/lens can be used. For initial setting up, source 8 is switched off and a visible light source 9 switched on. Light from 9 is reflected by prism hypotenuse 5 on to the mirror lens whereby it is refracted by the lens 3, reflected by a silvered surface 3<SP>1</SP> and refracted again to form a parallel beam which is directed towards the distant reflector. Light from the reflector is focused by lenses 1 and 2 on to lens 11 via hypotenuse 5 and the focused light is observed at O 2 via reflector 15 and eyepiece 16, 17. For range measurement, source 9 is shut off and source 8 switched on, the infra-red light from which is directed to the mirror/lens 3 by reflective coating 6. Reflector 15 is now in inactive position 151 whereby the focused reflected infra-red at 10 is directed via lens 12 and diaphragm 13 on to the photosensitive means 14.
