Abstract

1,197,565. Measuring liquidus points. J.C. QUAYLE. Sept. 6, 1967 [Sept. 8, 1966], No. 40172/66. Headings G1D, G1N. A continuous flow cryometer comprises a duct 4 through which there flows a liquid, the liquidus point (or temperature at which the liquid is in thermal equilibrium with its crystals) of which is to be continuously measured. The duct comprises flat plates 5, 6 and a temperature measuring device 8 such as a platinum resistance thermometer, surrounded by a thin metal sheath, is located in a space 10 filled with sample liquid from the liquid stream flowing between the plates. A thin magnetic spring strip 11 is maintained in vibration by an electromagnet 14, 15 and sweeps the sample liquid into the space 10. One or both of the plates 5, 6 is cooled until the liquid in the space 10 freezes thus preventing the vibration of the strip 11. The cessation of the vibration is detected by a pick-up coil 12 and the cooling is decreased until the vibration begins again. The temperature of the liquid around the top of the space 10 therefore hovers around the liquidus temperature. The measurement of the liquidus print gives an indication of the purity of the liquid.
