Abstract

1,197,470. Forging, making pipe fittings. H. P. BINKS. 25 Feb., 1969 [6 Dec., 1967], No. 55461/67. Headings B3A and B3H. An apparatus for cold forming pipe-fittings from a solid billet comprises a two-part seperable die 7, 8 defining a T-shaped chamber and a sleeve 12, 14, 15 slidable in each bore of the chamber with a punch 13, 16, 17 slidable in each sleeve. An hydraulic piston-cylinder assembly A opens and closes the die and hydraulic piston-cylinder units B, C, D actuate the sleeves and punches. Each unit B, C, D carries a sleeve locking unit E, F, G to prevent relative movement of each sleeve and punch. Each unit is formed on a support arm 26 and comprises a pneumatic piston-cylinder assembly 27, 28 whose piston is connected to a sleeve locking member 30. In operation a metal billet S, e.g. aluminium, is placed in the vertical bore of the lower die 7 and the dies are closed. The sleeves 12, 14, 15 are locked relative to the punches 13, 16, 17. The hydraulic units C, D then move the punches 16, 17 to their innermost position and the punch 13 is then moved to shape the billet, Fig. 4 (not shown). The pneumatic units F, G then unlock their sleeves and the punches 16, 17 are advanced to cause the metal to flow rearward over them, Fig. 5. The punches 16, 17 are retained in their inner position and then the pneumatic unit E releases its sleeve. The vertical limb of the fitting is then formed by the punch 13. The dies are then moved apart and the T-piece ejected by pneumatically operated ejector unit H. The webs are removed by machining. The apparatus may be modified to produce cruciform pieces, elbow pieces or Y-pieces. The apparatus may be operated mechanically instead of hydraulically.
