Abstract

1,183,160. Temperature indicators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. Nov.8, 1968, No.52958/68. Heading G1D. A chemical therometer comprises a tab 22 of themoplastic material in which are found a number of elongated parallel cells 12a to 12j each respectively filled with material 14a to 14j which changes its appearance at respective threshold temperatures different for each of the cells 12a to 12j and suitably disposed in the range 98‹ to 103‹F. The cells as preferably cylindrical and found between two sheets of thermoplastic material, are being transparent for viewing the cells, with magnification provided by the outer cylindrical surface, and the other being pigmented e.g. black to provide a suitable background. As an alternative the cells may be found as troughs in the pigmented sheet overlaid with a flat transparent sheet. The temperature sensitive material are preferably hysteretic cholesteric liquid crystalline compositions which change from a green colour to colourless at the threshold temperature. The compositions of the materials 14a to 14j may be such as to provide a graded series of temperature change indications in equal steps in the cells from 12a to 12j, and the cells maybe disposed in groups to facilitate reading of the temperature achieved by counting the number of cells which have changed colour after insertion of the tab 22 in a patients mouth. A smaller number of cells may be provided to merely give indication of temperatures below, at, or above normal if desired. In an alternative embodiment the cells are disposed in circumferentially round or elongated circular section body off thermoplastics material, the cells extending longitudinally with respect to the body.
