Abstract

1,182,574. Orientating articles on conveyers. MANDREL INDUSTRIES, Inc. 4 July, 1968 [14 July, 1967], No. 32015/68. Heading B8A. Cans 13 are delivered in random orientation by a conveyer belt 22 to a rotating wheel 24 with pockets 28 to receive individual cans whereby on passage around the wheel the cans are forced by centrifugal force against a stationary wall 31 and are thereby caused to rotate about their own axis. Each pocket 28 has a slot 53 through which a photo-electric device 51, corresponding to each pocket and rotating therewith, may detect a pre-determined part of the can label, shown diagrammatically at 14 and on so doing initiates a pulse through a control circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), to actuate a clamp 34 to clamp the can in its pocket against further rotation. The cans are thus fed to a conveyer belt 42 with a common orientation. A pair of magnetic reed switches 63, 64 disposed above each pocket are actuated by permanent magnets 66, 67 respectively located at the feed and discharge points of the wheel 24 to reset and release the clamp 34 at said positions.
